Welcome To Alaska From Bill Bailey Travel Club
Alaska is a place where wilderness still controls the majority of the state. To illustrate the point, Juneau, Alaska’s capital city, has no road access and is only reached by air or sea. To say Alaska is wild is an understatement. A vacation in Alaska can prove to be more like visiting a far off country than a U.S. state.
Relatively new to the Union, Alaska, became the 49th state on January 3rd, 1959. Its area is almost 600,000 square miles with a population of about 630,000 total residents. Basic facts of interest include:
- State Flower – Forget-me-not
- State Fish – King Salmon
- State Tree – Sitka Spruce
- State Sport – Dog Mushing
- State Mammal – Moose
- State Fossil – Woolly Mammoth
How knowing the facts can help you plan your vacation
Understanding a bit about a destination can be very helpful. For example, Alaska is home to the tallest mountain in North America, Mount McKinley at 20,320 feet. If you are a mountain climber or photographer, Alaska offers a variety of opportunities including not only mountains, but more glaciers than any other state and snowfall of unbelievable amounts (974.5 inches in 1952-53). For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, Alaska has 15 National Parks, touches two oceans, two seas and the Gulf of Alaska and it’ state mineral is gold.
Alaska has a budding tourism industry, focused on the extreme outdoors or the luxury or adventure cruise industries for good reason. For the ultimate adventure, head north to Alaska and begin exploring the wilderness of America.
