How To Avoid Travel Scams By Bill Bailey

Posted on 11.22.10

Traveling to a foreign country can be a great way to spend your vacation, unfortunately, if you are unfamiliar with the culture and presenting yourself as an “obvious tourist” you may fall victim to travel scams more easily. Bill Bailey would like to offer you some advice on how you can better avoid travel scams when traveling in a foreign country.

Bill Bailey Avoiding Travel Scams While Traveling Abroad

Often, travelers that are inexperienced can be naive and fall prey to travel scams. In order to prevent this here is a look at some of the more prevalent ways in which others may try to scam you while you are traveling.

The bump and run

This one can happen anywhere, in the U.S. or abroad. As a traveler though, you are often sidetracked more easily trying to find your next stop or fiddling with your camera. The bump and run is what you would expect from the pickpocket. They bump, grab your money or other valuables and then disappear into a crowd of strangers. Now you are out of luck, no recourse, and no idea what the person even looked like.

Posers

People often find creative disguises in order to fool the wayward traveler while in a foreign country. Posing as police officers, men of consequence and even the “interested woman” can all be a rouse to fool you into letting go of your property, thus falling prey to a travel scam. Bill Bailey advises you to avoid this travel scam by simply being wary of all strangers. This is not to say that there is no one you can trust, but use your common sense and keep your valuables stored in places less obvious. Never keep your money all in one spot and ask for credentials when someone is claiming authority.

The best ways to keep your money when traveling abroad are quite simple really. Don’t give it out for free, pay attention to the exchange, don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket, don’t keep all your money in one spot and most of all, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Bill Bailey reminds you that travel scams exist everywhere, traveling or not. As such, staying aware is the best way to avoid scams. Bill Bailey advises you to be smart, use your best judgment and avoid the travel scam .
