Enjoying History This MLK Jr Day In Washington DC

Washington DC In 2013, Martin Luther King Jr Day is being celebrated this day. Where better to learn more about the history of the day and the man behind the day than in our nations capitol city of Washington DC.

This entire week, beginning with today is likely to be filled with history seekers both past and present as today is also the Inaugural day of the President of the United States as the 20th fell on a Sunday this year. Keeping this in mind, getting around the city today and throughout the rest of the week may be difficult, so plan ahead before your visit.

If you are planning on getting to know more about history in Washington DC today, this week or in upcoming weeks, this is one of the best places to do it. Cost effective, family friendly and filled with historic sites which are open daily, Washington DC has much to offer the history buff. In honor of today, lets start with the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial, one of the top historic and cultural destinations in DC today.

The Memorial opened not long ago in fact, less than two years ago on August 28th, 2011 in honor the 48th anniversary of the speech made by Martin Luther on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Located on the National Mall, it is the only sculpture dedicated to a non president today. Representing the a dream of peace and equality that is yet to be accomplished, this monument is a memorial and tribute to an amazing man with an amazing legacy which lives on still today.

Within the area, a number of the city’s other top monuments can also be found as well. They include:

  • The Lincoln Memorial
  • The Franklin D Roosevelt Memorial
  • Jefferson Memorial

Elsewhere, other top attractions include the Smithsonian Institute Museums the National Archives, Fords Theatre and the Kennedy Center as well.

Tips for travel in DC

  • Plan ahead when visiting popular destinations such as Washington DC. Get familiar with transportation options and plan to leave early especially on days with large functions occurring such as the inaugural day.
