Sangchris Lake State Park

Sangchris Lake State Park encompasses over 3,000 acres and offers 120 miles of shoreline and is the ideal destination for a variety of outdoor activities just miles from Springfield. Fishing, boating, hunting, camping and hiking trails offer you an ideal destination to spend the day or longer exploring the beauty of Central Illinois.

Horseshoe Lake State Park

Another popular nearby state park, Horseshoe Lake State Park is located just off Highway 111 in Madison County and encompasses over 2,900 acres. Situated in a flood plain which follows the Mississippi River down to Kentucky, this area was once prone to extensive flooding until the construction of the levies in the area. During this flooding, the river would sometimes change directions and cut new channels forming natural oxbow lakes like Horseshoe Lake which was formed long ago. Today, silt buildup has shallowed the lake which averages only 3 feet deep. While the lake is shallow, there are plenty of things to see and do here including evidence of ancient Native Indian Groups, fishing, camping, boating, hiking, hunting and birdwatching.

Coffeen Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

First opened in 1986, this popular fish and wildlife area is known for its successful hunting and fishing opportunities. The lake itself was created when the power company built a 75 foot high earthen dam on Shoal Creek. The dense oak hickory forests surrounding the lake provide an ideal location for birds and animals in the region. Many species of birds and mammals are visible throughout the area. Today, popular ways to enjoy this popular natural area include boating, fishing, hunting, camping and picnicking.

Beaver Dam State Park

Roughly 750 acres in size, Beaver Dam State Park has long been a popular fishing area. As far back as the 1890’s, visitors and residents of the area have been visiting this area since the first beavers created the lake long ago. An area which includes both upland and bottomland, this area is rich in wildlife. Many songbirds, fish and a variety of other reptiles, amphibians and mammals are located throughout the park. A popular place to camp, picnic, fish and hike, the parks is also home to an archery range and is open for certain hunting seasons. As well.
